Civil / Structural Engineer
Location: Charlotte, NC (SouthPark)
Schedule: Hybrid — 3 days in office / 2 days remote
Travel: Up to 50% (typically less)
Salary: $110,000 - $135,000
About the Role
National Gypsum is seeking a Civil / Structural Engineer to support manufacturing plants across the organization. This is a hands-on role built for someone who enjoys solving real-world structural challenges in active industrial environments. The focus is on engineering depth over project management.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design and evaluate structural steel systems, mezzanines, and concrete foundations
- Support plant-led projects involving facility expansions, equipment additions, repairs, and modifications
- Provide engineering judgment on life-safety and structural damage-related issues
- Serve as an internal engineering resource for plant teams and non-technical stakeholders
- Travel to plant locations as needed to assess conditions and support execution
- Coordinate with outside engineering firms for stamped drawings and permitting
This work is highly varied and far from cookie-cutter. Projects can span manufacturing, warehouse, rail, and marine-related environments, with facilities ranging from over 100 years old to newly built. Some drawings may be incomplete or outdated, so the ability to think critically and make sound field-based engineering judgments is important.
What They’re Looking For
- Strong experience with structural steel and concrete foundation design
- Ability to work independently and make practical engineering decisions
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience in industrial or manufacturing environments is highly preferred
- Candidates coming from consulting who want to move away from a billable-hour environment may find this especially attractive
Experience Profile
- Ideal background is around 10+ years of experience
- Candidates with 5+ years and strong upside will also be considered
- PE license strongly preferred, but not required
- Candidates without a PE who are interested in pursuing it will be supported through testing and continuing education
Tools & Technical Environment
- AutoCAD (2D/3D) required
- RISA or similar structural analysis software is a plus
- Exposure to 3D laser scanning is a plus; National Gypsum uses FARO
- Revit is not used in this role
Why Someone Would Take It
- Hands-on structural role with real impact on plant operations and safety
- Diverse project work across a broad range of facility types
- Strong emphasis on practical engineering judgment
- Hybrid schedule with travel days counting as in-office days
- Stable company culture focused on long-term careers, retention, and providing the right tools to do the job well
