Sustainable Design Committee

As structural engineers, we have been asked by society to meet various technical, social, cost, and environmental challenges. In the 21^st century, the needs of sustainability require solutions that meet all the above-mentioned challenges. The SEA of NC Sustainable Design Committee is among the first Sustainable Design Committees of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. Our mission is to educate our engineers and to provide advocacy for our profession to advance the sustainable design process in our day-to-day practice. We would like to engage and challenge our members to join us in pursuing several initiatives, including, but not limited to:

Discussing the latest information related to sustainable design in structures from articles and research papers
Inviting guest speakers to present on topics related to sustainability in structures
Educating each other on embodied carbon, life cycle assessments, and the SE 2050 Challenge
Coordinating with our partners in construction to understand material supply chains and availability of new sustainable technologies
Coordinating with our partners in architecture and engineering regarding sustainable design issues of mutual interest
Supporting the understanding and careful implementation of sustainable design in our structures.
Supporting the transition to a circular economy in structures.
