Presentation Title: ASCE 7 (Wind) and a Peak Behind the Building Code Curtain

Ever wonder how building codes are developed? Or the difference between a code and a standard? This presentation will provide an overview of design standard development, where they fit in with building codes, and what it’s like to participate in standard development. The presentation will focus on ASCE 7 and some of the new provisions in 7-22, particularly the tornado provisions, along with some tips and tricks on navigating the standard. The presentation will close with commonly misunderstood client design questions that can be answered with ASCE 7.

Speaker Bio:

Cherylyn Henry, P.E., is the structures group lead and a project manager with ZAPATA in Charlotte, NC, and has 17 years of design experience in buildings and bridges. Ms. Henry has been a member of the ASCE 7 Wind Load Subcommittee since 2012, serving as secretary for the 7-16 cycle and vice chair for the 7-22 cycle. She is also a voting member of the ASCE 7 Main Committee. Ms. Henry is a member of ASCE's Codes and Standards Committee, which oversees codes and standards development activities for the society. She also serves North Carolina Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 3 as a Structures Specialist.
