Note that we are meeting on May 9, a week earlier than usual.

Safe refuge, or safe havens, are engineer-selected buildings (or rooms within a building) that offer the best available protection for employees, citizens, rescue personnel, or first responders, based on the anticipated hazard.  The hazard might be an on-coming hurricane, rising floodwaters, secondary collapse, HazMat release, earthquake, or aftershocks.  FEMA has developed a checklist protocol for ranking available structures that is meant to be used by structural engineers.

Tom Caldwell, a member of Triangle SEA, will present on this process.  Tom is on the SEA SEER Committee and is active with urban search and rescue teams (USAR).  Even if we don’t actively participate with USAR, one never knows when we might be called upon to quickly identify the safest available refuge.

This meeting is free for members or applicants with membership form/dues, and $10 for non-members. Please make your reservation to attend by 5:00 pm Monday, May 7.  RSVP by clicking the "Register Now" link.  Members will login to the website and register, and non-members can register by clicking "Continue as Guest". Non-members can either pay through the website with a credit card, or can click "bypass payment" and bring a check to the meeting made out to "SEA Triangle".

The meeting will be held in the 3rd floor Training Room of Hazen & Sawyer.
